Art workshop in Jamaica’s oldest orphanage

Supported by Embassy of Jamaica in Tokyo and National Gallery of Jamaica, we held an art workshop in Jamaica’s oldest orphanage “Maxfield Park Children’s Home” on August 16th.
There are presently 105 children in care, ranging in age from infants to 18 years old. Children who have been abandoned, made homeless and suffered by physical abuse are gathered here. The Home provides children a safety, education, medication, activities to broaden their horizon and support their future.
While preparing for an art workshop, children were excited and fun conversations kept on going. However, once they held a paintbrush, they became quiet and started to focus on drawing. Some started to write “LIKE ME” and “LOVE ME”.
After the art workshop, we had a conversation about future with older children. “I don’t want to talk about my family but can I talk to you about my dream?” “Can I ask for your advice?” Children were sparkling their eyes and talked about their precious dreams.
